I was in a salon the recently where the salon owner was near tears over the waste that her stylists were creating with haircolor. So here are some thoughts on ways to minimize the color waste in your salon.

1. Invest in scales- Your favorite Kadus Distributor should have one or go to Bed Bath & Beyond and for under $30 you can find a digital scale.

2. Measure in grams not ounces.- It sounds weird but we as hairdressers hate math especially fractions mixing in grams works in increments of 10 (30 grams = 1 oz) because you ca measure in even round numbers the waste naturally goes down.

3. Play Games- Use a trash lined bucket at the backbar for excess color and at the end of the month weigh your color and formulate how much was wasted in dollars and communicate to your staff. Repeat the next month and have a pizza party or jeans day as an incentive for not overmixing. Get creative!

4. Box storage-Take out the internal directions in the box of Haircolor and use a tube squeezer not a Tube key to squeeze haircolor out of the tube and replace in the box with the small flap left hanging out, This identifies the box as the next to be used eliminating the partially used tubes of color hanging around that never get used.

5. Amount of Haircolor mixed- Here are some following guidelines for total mixing amounts:
Thin Density: 40 total Grams (20g Color + 20g Developer)
Average Density: 60 total Grams (30g Color + 30g Developer)
Thick Density: 80 total Grams (40g Color + 40g Developer)
